The Walthamstow community reacted in shock and sadness after finding out a dog was hit and killed. An unkown driver is alleged to have not stopped after hitting the dog something that the community on Facebook are struggling to come to terms with. A concerned resident posted on the Waltham Forest 4 Dogs page on Facebook on the 18th of June 2022.
She said: “I have some really upsetting news, and I just hope the owner can have some closure. My dad was out walking Bambi, and a small brown dachshund ran out by north countess road and billet road. It was hit by a car. He tried to give some first aid. The little dog was breathing for a while and then he gave rescue breaths and chest compressions.
“But unfortunately, the dog did not survive, it’s head injury was really severe. The car did not stop and my dad was focused on the dog rather than the car, the dog was taken by a passer-by as he believed the owner lived near Cheney row. I’m so sorry and we are both so saddened.”

UnderSection 170 of the Road Traffic 1988 Act, it is a requirement that if a motorist hits an animal they must stop and report the incident to the police. The animals that are included on the list are dogs, horses, cattle, eg cows, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and mules. You must report the incident whether or not the animal is killed.
Comments from other people expressed their sadness at the situation and disbelief that the driver drove off. One comment by a person read: “I was right there, it happened right Infront of me and my driver…. Thank you to the family that got out to help the dog, I just wish I could have been some more use but if I get the license plate I will post it here.”
Another concerned comment showed support for the person who stopped and helped. They wrote: “Much respect to your dad and he did what he thought was right at the time and he was 100 per cent right to concentrate on the dog and not the car. He did not want the dog to suffer and the dog passed in the company of someone caring for him/her and was not alone at the side of the road where the heartless driver of the car left him, sorry for all involved in this tragic time.”
Another commenter said: “That’s so tragic, your poor Dad though, what a hero.” One commenter said: “Poor little thing. How can people be so horrible if they saw the little dog how could they have carried on driving and done that??”. A third added: “How sad. I know accidents happen but not to even stop is unforgivable. Poor little one. Rest peacefully sweetheart. “
Even a local councillor has seemingly become involved in the incident after it caused so much upset in the community.
MyLondon has reached out to the police for comment about the incident. Karen Bellamy, the councillor for Waltham Forest asked in the comments that anyone who had information about the incident reach out. “Please can someone email me I can pass on any information to the police,” she said.
