A woman was left with serious injuries to her hand after she was bitten by a Rottweiler in Langford on Tuesday.
The woman was out with her dog in a shared backyard when another tenant of the home on Dornier Road in the West Hills area opened his door to let the Rottweiler out.
It charged at the woman, biting her hand, West Shore RCMP Const. Alex Bérubé said.
RCMP and B.C. Ambulance paramedics were called. The woman was bleeding heavily and was taken to hospital by ambulance. She required 12 stitches and was released.
Police determined there was no criminal intent, so the case was handed over to Capital Regional District Animal Control.
Chief bylaw officer Don Brown said after speaking with the victim, he decided to issue a dangerous-dog caution, which is less serious than a dangerous-dog designation.
Brown said the Rottweiler was calm and friendly when an animal control officer arrived at the property, and this is the first time the dog has attacked anyone.
