Nestlé Purina PetCare Company Expands Recall of Dry Dog Food Due to Elevated Levels of Vitamin D
Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has issued a voluntary recall of their product ‘Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL)’ prescription dry dog food due to elevated levels of Vitamin D. The company is expanding the recall to include two additional product lots as of March 10, 2023. These lots precede the production dates of the originally recalled lots that were identified in February 2023.
The expanded voluntary recall was prompted by Purina’s investigation, which revealed a production error from a U.S. supplier that was made specifically to PPVD EL and resulted in potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D. Although Vitamin D is essential for dogs, excessive ingestion of it could lead to health complications, including vomiting, excessive drooling, weight loss, and loss of appetite, as stated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In extreme cases, an overdose of Vitamin D could result in kidney failure or death.
According to Purina’s latest announcement, the affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States but only “through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription.” If you have purchased bags of PPVD EL with the UPC and Production Codes listed below, please discard them immediately:
Product | UPC Code | Production Code (*First 8 characters equal to)
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) 8 lb and 20 lb bags | 38100 19190 – 8 lb | 2213 1082 (NEW)
