Squeaky, the Cat That Overcame Trauma and Found Love
Squeaky is a cat that was adopted by Ben Herman and his wife Michele after their previous owner decided that he had too many cats and wanted to drop them off at a shelter. When they took her in, Squeaky was extremely thin and unhealthy, and she was also very scared and shy, hiding most of the time behind a radiator, afraid to come out to eat or use the litter box.
Michele and Ben soon discovered that Squeaky had health issues and that she had been severely bullied by the other cats in her previous home. They believe that the other cats beat her up every time she tried to come out and eat, which is why she had to hide and had even scratched a hole in the back of a sofa to do her business.
However, since joining Ben and Michele, Squeaky has made remarkable progress to come out of her shell. She is now much healthier, round, and happy. But, she is still a very quirky cat with a few unique habits that make her special.
For instance, Squeaky is still incredibly jittery and sensitive to loud noises, and she doesn’t like tall men standing close to her. Whenever Ben, who is 6 feet 2 inches tall, approaches her, she runs away, but she loves it when he is sitting down or lying in bed, and she would cuddle and let him pet her.
Squeaky’s Obsession with Food
One of Squeaky’s more endearing quirks is her obsession with food. Despite being fed regularly at 7:00 am, she starts meowing and scratching up furniture as early as 5:00 am, demanding to be fed immediately. She then tries to eat out of her sister Nettie’s bowl, which sometimes necessitates the bowl being put atop the refrigerator until Nettie is ready to eat again.
Around 10:00 am, Squeaky starts meowing requests for dry food, and then come 1:00 pm, she starts meowing sadly and circling about in a worried manner. Ben and Michele believe she is concerned she won’t be fed.
Squeaky Inspects Her Humans’ Food
Even when Ben and Michele have something to eat, Squeaky must inspect it to see if it’s something she would like. If it is, she’ll either give them a wide-eyed pleading expression, or she’ll simply try to snatch some of their food with her paw or mouth; she is incredibly persistent.
Michele even drew an illustration to capture her love of food entitled “Squeaky Loves to Eat.”
Squeaky Likes to Play
Despite her traumatic past, Squeaky has adapted to her new home, and she has developed a close relationship with her sister Nettie as well. She enjoys playing with her toy mice and occasionally play-fighting with them, but her favorite toy is a pencil, pen, or marker from Michele’s art supplies that she would grab in her teeth, carry off while yowling, and then wrestle with as it rolls all over the place.
Squeaky’s Cautionary Tale
Squeaky’s story is a classic example of how cats can be very much like people. If they experience trauma when young, this trauma can affect them for the rest of their life. As Michele and Ben often tell people, it is crucial to treat four-legged friends with kindness.
Although Squeaky still experiences some of the trauma from her past, she is now much happier and enjoys life in her new home, where she has food and two humans who love her. Despite her sometimes-unconventional behavior, she brightens up Ben and Michele’s life in many ways.
In conclusion, Squeaky is a wonder cat that overcame her past traumas to find love and happiness in her new home. Her quirks may be unique, but they make her all the more endearing to Ben and Michele, who love her for who she is.
