‘She loves people and getting attention. Her favourite toy is a white baseball and whenever she is outside that is what she wants to play with. She loves standing outside when it’s windy, letting the wind run through her hair, and if it’s raining, Even better!’
Meet Kimi, the gorgeous German Shepherd from Kerry.
Her owner, Siobhan Flynn, says that it was love at first sight.
She told RSVP Madra: “We had always wanted a dog, as we both grew up with animals so we were delighted when we were told a litter of puppies were looking for a home.
“We got Kimi on the 15th September 2019 and it was the best thing we did. She was such a small bundle of fluff we immediately fell in love with her. We got her from a friend of ours who had sent us pictures of the litter and we knew Kimi needed to have a home with us.
“When we went to see her she was the only one that sat to the side and waited. All her siblings were jumping all over us and playing, while Kimi sat and watched. This only made us want her more. It only took two days for Kimi’s true side to come out, which is pure bubbly. She loves running and playing and the more people who are around the better! Also Kimi got her name from the famous F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen.”

Kimi was meant for the family, and made herself at home immediately.
“Kimi settled in so well,” said Siobhan. “She was naturally very upset the first night but we made sure she had plenty of cuddles, toys and blankets to try help her feel comfortable. After the first night she found a routine and has been amazing ever since.
“Don’t get me wrong she has her moments, but she will come and nuzzle when she knows she’s done something she shouldn’t. As a puppy Kimi loved a teddy we gave her. It was a soft strawberry toy, which we called Mr.Strawberry. Every time we asked her where it was she would go fetch it and then fall asleep with it. Once her back teeth were coming through, poor Mr.Strawberry didn’t last long.”
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Kimi though, as she went through a traumatic incident while she was still a pup.

“Unfortunately Kimi had a very serious accident in May 2020 when she was 10 months old,” explained Siobhan. “She severed her achilles tendon on her back right leg, after hedge cutters were left on the ground, and broke two toes on her back left leg.
“This was absolutely devastating to us as we have always babied her and did everything we could to keep her safe. She was referred to Gillabbey’s Veterinary Surgery in Cork, and it was a long nine months before we could finally say that she was doing well and would be able to live a normal life.
“After three major operations we were told we had one last chance for Kimi to save her leg from amputation. Our surgeon put a metal bar where her achilles tendon would have been and fused it to her bone. We then had to wait to see if her body would reject the metal bar but after a lot of prayers we were told that Kimi was going to be just fine.”
Luckily, Kimi managed to bounce back, but it took a little while.
“It took until March or April 2021 for her to be able to go for her normal walks on the beach but she is running all over the garden now and loves going for her daily walks,” said Siobhan. “All the poking, prodding and pain hasn’t had an effect on her at all and she has always remained a very loyal and loving dog. Even when she had to be carried outside to go to the toilet or have her wounds washed out several times a day she would still snuggle into us.”
Siobhan and her family love Kimi and would be lost without her.

“Kimis personality is infectious and I know I am biased but I have yet to find a person who doesn’t fall in love with her,” she said. “She loves people and getting attention. Her favourite toy is a white baseball and whenever she is outside that is what she wants to play with. She loves standing outside when it’s windy, letting the wind run through her hair, and if it’s raining, Even better!
“When she comes inside she sits down in the hall and gives you her paws so you can clean them and does this so much that her sister Darcie now does the same thing.
“We would be lost without Kimi and even though we went through a terrifying year with her I wouldn’t change her for the world.”
