An investigation into an alleged act of animal cruelty has begun after an Australian bulldog was found critically injured in an upside-down kennel at the base of a cliff in Wollongong.
A bushwalker heard a dog yelping and was able to locate the bulldog at the bottom of the escarpment near Clive Bissell Drive at Mount Ousley yesterday at 8.30am.
The bulldog appeared to be in poor health and looked emaciated.

Officers from the Wollongong Police District, Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit and the SES immediately conducted a rescue operation to retrieve the injured dog.
The kennel is currently undergoing forensic examination.
It is believed the kennel was thrown off the cliff in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Australian bulldog was taken to a local vet for treatment but had to be euthanised due to the seriousness of his condition and injuries.
Local police and RSPCA NSW are currently investigating the incident. Investigators are imploring anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
Anyone with a dashcam who drove through the area at the time of the incident is also encouraged to come forward with any relevant footage.
